Bonkers Bristol It’s a Knockout!

Sunday 20th September was not only a gloriously sunny day but also Children Today’s final instalment of the ‘It’s a Knockout’ Challenge 2009. Five teams and many enthusiastic supporters descended upon the Redwood Hotel & Country Club in Failand, Bristol, which was generously donated for use, free of charge.

The games began in the afternoon sunshine and each team was raring to go and to be crowned the winners of the Bristol leg of the challenge! Our host, Timmy Mallet was his excellent barmy self and his enthusiasm was contagious!

This year’s winners were Holly’s Heroes (pictured). We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part and helped make this event possible.

PFA South Africa Challenge 2009 Update

Adventurers Peter Evans and David Raine who volunteered to take part and successfully completed the PFA South Africa Challenge 2009. Both employees of the PCU, whose support of Children Today has been invaluable, not only had a challenging but terrific time have collectively raised £12,250 for Children Today!

The monies raised from such events goes toward helping children like Demi (pictured with mum, Peter and David at the PCU Headquarters in Birmingham). Children Today received an application from the mother of Demi who is 11 years old and lives in Birmingham.  Demi has cerebral palsy and her mum Victoria requested funding for a pushchair.  Demi has a wheelchair, but because it is quite low and heavy, Victoria found it difficult to push.  A pushchair would also be easier to fold down and transport around and would help Victoria take Demi out a lot more.   In addition the pushchair has special postural support to help keep Demi’s body aligned appropriately while seated.  Children Today recognised the benefits this piece of equipment would bring to Demi and Victoria’s daily lives and were delighted to be able to fund the pushchair.

Children Today would like to say thank you to Peter and David and everyone else who raised money for the PFA South Africa Challenge 2009 as the monies raised from this event has helped Children Today fund pieces of specialised equipment like Demi’s pushchair.

PFA’s Gordon Taylor Presents South Africa Cup

On Friday 4th September members of Children Today, the Professional Footballers’ Association and local and national media gathered at the PFA’s headquarters in Manchester in recoginition of the tremendous support Children Today received from the Professional Footballers’ Association in sponsoring the South Africa Challenge 2009.

Former Bolton Wanderers player Peter Nicholson who led a team of charity supporters in this event and took part in various events during the challenge also came out in support of Children Today. He commented “This challenge was very rewarding but tough going at times. Each day brought something new and physically demanding, but this has given me a greater understanding of how the disabled children we are raising money for back in the UK are challenged every day of their lives.” Peter is pictured here with one of the children, we have been able to help. Children Today were able to purchase a specialised trike for  Amelia which promotes muscle tone and allows greater social interaction.

Chief Executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association Gordon Taylor presented the PFA International Challnege Cup to the 2009 winning team. Their continued support of the charity, especially during these challneging economic times, is hugely apprciated.
